Patientʹs Knowledge about Patientsʹ Rights Legislation

Introduction: Guidelines and rules in the field of ethics is important to patients, but these rules entitled "Patientsʹ Rights Legislation" are not used practically and coherently in Iranʹs rules. The purpose of this study was to determine the patientsʹ awareness hospitalized in training hospitals of Isfahan city about patientsʹ rights legislation. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in the fourth quarter of 2006, in 8 training hospitals in Isfahan city. The knowledge of hospitalized patients regarding their rights legislation was evaluated by interviewers through interviews and completing the relevant checklist. The checklist was prepared by the study of library formulation and its formal validity and reliability was confirmed by experts in this field. The contribution ratio of each hospital from requested 385 patients was determined regarding to the number of active beds and mean of patientʹs hospitalization period during study. Obtained data analyzed by SPSS software. Results: Over 50 percent of patients were not aware about the patientsʹ rights legislation. This lack of knowledge, specially was about the rights to transfer the patient during treatment to other medical centers (which requires specialized medical services care), the right to allow or not allow the use of medical information for their own case of matters, secrecy Physician and treatment team, as well as confidentiality of medical information privacy and the need for the patient by the hospital. Conclusion: The findings of present study have indicated that most of the patients have not proper knowledge about their rights of legislation, which emphasized the importance of patients education in this regard.
