Leisure Time and Identity: A Sociological Study of the Relationship between Leisure Time and Identity among the Youth of Babolsar City

Leisure time and the manner of spending it has become the intersection of culture and identity for the youth. This has made it one of the main topics for leisure time sociology which has attracted the attention of social sciences scholars in recent decades. The present study attempts to measure and study the manner of spending leisure time and its relationship to identity, as well as making the concept prominent for the youth of Babolsar. For measuring and studying this topic, the theories of Giddens and Bourdieu are used and for measuring leisure time and identity variables t-test and Pearson tests are utilized. The statistical population of this study was the youth of Babolsar from among whom through multistep stratified cluster sampling and Cochran Technique 380 cases were chosen. The results of this study show that socio-economic status and education correlate with the manner of spending leisure time. In addition, there is a significant relationship between manners of spending leisure time and identity among the youth. Compared to girls, boysʹ tendency toward leisure time activity was higher. As Bourdieu and Giddens state, in late modernity leisure time patterns -the indices of which are the culture of consumerism and cultural merchandization- play a crucial role in the formation of personal identity. The present study has also confirmed that the manner of spending leisure time (as an index of life style) has a remarkable effect on personal identity.
