Differences Between Islamic Mysticism and Neo-Spirituality

Mysticism introduces a god to humans who can be felt and witnessed internally. The focal point of religious mysticism is existence of God as the center of life and universe. From the perspective of epistemology, the tool for recognition in mysticism is the human heart or an internal cause, which can never be appraised with superficial scientific criteria. In fact, this is the cause of the existence of different branches and schools of thought under the eye-catching name of mysticism. After the Renaissance, various sects of secular mysticism attracted numerous followers and presented themselves as religious mysticism. All those who are attracted to these sects claim that they can experience tranquility and peace, and feel God better than what religions claim. The crux of the matter is that due to the non-presentation of a genuine religion, manmade spirituality has been received enthusiastically in the West. In fact, these groups call their inclinations ʹmysticismʹ and this has appealed to naive people. In this study, the fundamental differences between these new sects and Islamic mysticism are scrutinized to show that mysticism is only a common terminology used by both.
