توسعه اطلاعات و فناوري هاي ارتباطي در سال هاي اخير، با شتابي فوقا لعاده، روند « صنعتي » سراسر جهان را به سوي « جامعه اطلاعاتي » كشانده است. عميق و غيرخطي بودن اين روند، در مقايسه با انقلاب صنعتي قبل، دغدغه هاي فرهنگي، اقتصادي، و اجتماعي بسيار فزونت ري براي بشريت پديد آورده است. در اين عرصه، آرشيوها - كه صرفاً حاوي منابع ديداري و شنيداري يا اسناد تاريخي هستند - به عنوان مخازني كما هميت به شمار نميآ يند، بلكه در كانون اطلاع رساني قرار دارند و محتواي فرهنگي را تامين مي كنند تا افراد، بتوانند از حقوقشان دفاع كنند؛ آموزش را بيش از پيش رواج دهند، و فرهنگي زنده و پويا داشته باشند. در هر كشوري، گنجينه اسناد، بخش مهمي از ميراث و منابع اطلاعاتي آن كشور شمرده مي شود و منابع آن، به دليل منحصر به فرد بودن و دربرداشتن اسناد مهم و فاقد جايگزين، بخشي از سرمايه ملي محسوب مي گردد. بديهي است كه اين ميراث، در حفظ هويت هاي فرهنگي، برقراري ارتباط ميان گذشته و حال، و ترسيم آينده، از اهميت حياتي برخوردار است و همين امر، موجب مي شود تا مسيوليتي مهم بر عهده دوستداران، حافظان و صاحبان اين حافظه ملي باشد. مقاله حاضر، بر آن است تا به بررسي نقش يونسكو در حفظ ميراث مستند بپردازد و برنامه هايي را كه تاكنون اين سازمان به انجام رسانيده است، مورد مداقه قرار دهد.

The extreme rapid development of information and communication technologies in recent years has transformed the industrial world into an "information community". Being both deep and non-linear, this trend has larger implications for humanity than any previous industrial revolution, with consequent cultural, economical and social disturbances. In this context, archives cannot be dismissed as unimportant repositories, merely including audio-visual resources or historical records, but they are at the center of information services and the provision of cultural content in order to defend archivesʹ rights, propagate greater education and stimulate a lively and dynamic culture. The records repository is therefore a crucial legacy and information resource of every country, in other words, a national asset holding unique and irreplaceable records. Obviously, this legacy is vitally important for the maintenance of cultural identities, linking the past, present and future and creating visions for the future. This puts a profound responsibility on the shoulders of friends, keepers and owners of this national memory. The present article considers the role of UNESCO in the maintenance of the documentary legacy and examines the programs it has accomplished so far.
