One of the dualisms dominating recent debates in the philosophy of mind and epistemology concerns internalism and externalism. The former posits a subject immersed in a mental life that functions as the source of truth about the world. The latter suggests that the subject’s knowledge is largely dependent on environmental and physical factors where the truth about reality is to be found, rather than in the subject’s mind.1
However, experiences of art and film indicate ways to move beyond this impasse, especially when examined in the light of Husserl and Sartre’s phenomenology. This paper deals with aspects of this dualism and examine the image consciousness theory in Husserl and sartre’s phenomenology with regards to Hitchcock and Bu?uel’s movies.
