Transfer of Knowledge to Iran in the Safavid Era: A Letter on Modern Astronomy Explaining the Tychonic Model

به احتمال بسيار كهن‌ترين سند موجود به زبان فارسي كه به معرفي و تشريح علم هييت جديد پرداخته است، نامه‌اي است كه در سال 1624م، يعني كمتر از ربع قرن پس از مرگ تيكو براهه، در دوران شاه عباس اول تدوين شده است. اين نامه را اشراف‌زاده ايتاليايي، پيترو دلاواله، بر اساس گفتار كشيش و رياضي‌دان ايتاليايي كريستفرو بوري خطاب به دوست منجمش زين‌الدين لاري نوشته و براي او فرستاده است. در اين نامه دلاواله به تشريح مدل براهه مي‌پردازد و همراه آن براي اثبات برتري آن در مقايسه با نظام بطلميوسي دليل مي‌آورد. علاوه بر آن از رونق علوم رياضي و هييت در اروپا سخن مي‌گويد و از كوپرنيك و كپلر وگاليله به عنوان بزرگان اين علوم نام مي‌برد. وي همچنين خبر از اختراع تلسكوپ و رصد اقمار مشتري مي‌دهد. دلاواله در خاتمه از مطابقت مدل براهه با كتب مقدس مسيحيان سخن مي‌گويد و سعي دارد زين‌الدين لاري را قانع كند كه اين مدل مغايرتي با نص كتاب‌هاي مقدس و وحي ندارد.

A letter authored by the well-known Italian nobleman and traveller Pietro della Valle, dated 1624, is probably the oldest existing Persian document in which modern astronomy, in particular the Tychonic model, is introduced and discussed in detail. It was written in the reign of the Safavid Shah Abbas I, less than a quarter of century after Tycho Brahe’s death. In part it was based on what his Italian friend, the Jesuit priest and mathematician Christophoro Borri had told him in Goa, which he translated and sent from there to his Iranian friend, the astronomer Zayn al-D?n L?r?. In this letter, which is edited here, della Valle describes the Tychonic model and explains why it should be preferred to Ptolemy’s system. He also reports on the latest European scientific achievements, for example, the invention of the telescope and the observation of Mercury’s satellites, mentioning Copernicus, Kepler, and Galileo as being among Europe’s greatest astronomers and mathematicians. He concludes his letter by stating that the Tychonic model does not violate the Holy Scripture and divine revelation.
