A Study of Quineʹʹs Theory of Meaning from the Viewpoint of ‘Indeterminacy of Translation’

نظريه معناي كواين را مي‌‌توان از چند جنبه بررسي كرد. اين مقاله بر يكي از مهم‌‌ترين جوانب آن، يعني تز عدم تعين ترجمه، تمركز مي‌كند. در تز مذكور چند وجه از فلسفه كواين با هم ادغام شده‌‌اند و همين باعث شده است كه بررسي و تفسير آن بسيار پيچيده شود. تز عدم تعين ترجمه مي‌گويد كه در انتخاب بين دو يا چند دستورالعمل ترجمه با هم ناسازگار، كه هركدام با تمام معيارهاي رفتارشناختي افراد بومي تطابق داشته باشد، واقع امري براي ترجيح يكي بر ديگري وجود ندارد. اين مقاله با تكيه بر تمايز، يا دقيق‌‌تر عدم تقارن، بين عدم تعين ترجمه و نامتعين‌بودن نظريه ناظر به طبيعت، سعي مي‌كند نشان دهد كه محتواي خاص اين تز ادعايي وجودشناختي درباره معناست. از اين‌‌رو ابتدا به توضيح درك كواين از معنا، بررسي وجودشناسي مورد نظر او، و ارتباط بين اين دو مي‌پردازيم و سپس عدم تقارن بين دو تز پيش‌‌گفته را محل بحث قرار مي‌دهيم. از رهگذر اين مباحث مي‌‌توان به درك جديدي از نظريه معنا رسيد.

Quineʹs theory of meaning can be studied through several aspects. This article concentrates on one of the most important ones, i.e. ʹʹIndeterminacy of translationʹʹ. In the thesis, several sides of Quineʹs philosophy are combined, so that studying and interpreting it seem to be a difficult task. ʹʹIndeterminacy of translationʹʹ says that there is no fact of the matter to choose between two or more inconsistent translation manuals that each of them conforms to all of the nativeʹs behavioral criteria. After illustrating the asymmetry between ʹʹindeterminacy of translationʹʹ and ʹʹunder-determination of theory of natureʹʹ, we can conclude that the certain content of ʹʹIndeterminacy of translationʹʹ is an ontological claim about meaning. Therefore, at first, Quineʹs understanding of meaning, his preferred ontology, and the relation between these two, must be explained and described, and then the asymmetry between these two theses can be discussed. An attitude toward these subjects from this point of view, not only is perceived an original apprehension of theory of meaning, but also can originate a new method in order to study abstract objects, propositional attitudes and mental states.
