فضاي جمعي در يك شهر، بايد ضمن برخورداري از هويت مشخص و ويژه‌اي براي خود، از لحاظ بصري نيز متفاوت‌تر، خواناتر و خاطره‌انگيزتر از ديگر فضاهاي شهري باشد. در حقيقت يك فضاي جمعي براي اينكه در خاطره‌ها ثبت شود و در عين حال در هويت كلي شهر نيز نقش بازي كند، بايد در عين متفاوت و ويژه بودن، پيوستگي و همخواني ماهرانه‌اي نيز با ساير فضاهاي شهري داشته باشد. از آنجا كه امروزه بخش عمده ادراك شهروندان از شهر و فضاهاي شهري در شب رخ مي‌دهد، بنابراين زندگي شبانه شهر به دغدغه‌اي براي مديران و برنامه‌ريزان شهري تبديل شده است. در حقيقت بخش عمده‌اي از هويت فضاهاي جمعي در شهر وابسته به منظر شبانه آن است. در طراحي منظر شبانه براي شهرها يكي از پيچيده‌ترين و حساس‌ترين قسمت‌ها، برنامه‌ريزي و طراحي پلان نورپردازي شبانه است، كه علاوه بر تخصص و آشنايي با ويژگي‌هاي فني و زيبايي‌شناسي نور، نيازمند شناخت كافي و دقيق از شهر، هويت آن و مشخصه‌هاي شكل‌دهنده به منظر آن است. گروه معماري منظر West8 نيزدر طرح جامع نورپردازي براي توسعه هلسينكي بيش از هرچيز، به بازخواني هويت اصلي آن منطقه، كه تكيه بر ميراث طبيعي آن دارد، پرداخته است. استفاده از نور در طرح West8كاملاً هدفمند بوده و نورپردازي فقط در نقاط خاص طرح براي تاكيد بر عناصر نمادين و نشانه‌ها صورت گرفته است. همچنين در اين طرح به صورت هنرمندانه از هنر نور1 استفاده شده است.

Gathering places of towns should have a strong and special identity and be visually more different, recognizable, memorable and vivid from other places. In fact, gathering spaces should be in harmony and unity with other urban spaces of the city in order to make them a memorable and at the same time effective in forming the cityʹs overall identity. Today a main part of citizensʹ perception of the city and urban spaces, takes place at night. Therefore, the nightlife of the city has become a major concern for the urban planners and managers. A major part of gathering placesʹ identity also depends on their nightscape in the city. One of the most complicated and sensitive parts in designing nightscapes for the city is planning and designing a lighting master plan, an issue that is more important than specialty and knowledge of technical and aesthetic aspects of lighting. This needs a sufficient and precise understanding of the city, its identity and its qualifications which forms its landscape.
