ازآنجاكه مسيله اختيار و عقل در فلسفه و كلام اسلامي بسيار مورد توجه بوده است و در حوزه انسان‌شناسي نيز همواره از مباحث اصلي تلقي مي‌شود، هدف اين مقاله پرداختن به جايگاه آن در زندگي برزخي است. چون موضوع تمام رفتارها و خلقيات آدمي نفس است و نفس مراتب مختلف دارد و از‌جمله مراتب آن تعقل و اراده است و همه كمالات آدمي بر نفس مترتب مي‌شود و از‌طرف‌ديگر نفس يك حقيقت جاودانه است مي‌توان نتيجه گرفت قوا و مراتب آن نيز جاودان است و همان‌طور‌كه نفس مي‌تواند در وعاي دنيوي تعقل و تصميم‌گيري كند در وعاي برزخي نيز بر اين دو امر قادر است و اگر بپذيريم نفس موضوع استكمال برزخي است و قدرت تعقل و اختيار دارد مي‌توان نتيجه گرفت كه به‌جز محدوديت‌ها و تعارض ناشي از آن، كه در زندگي دنيوي منجر به خطا يا گناه مي‌شود، نظام زندگي گروهي و خانوادگي با همه شرايط موجود در دنيا در زندگي برزخي نيز وجود دارد. بنابراين اختيار انسان به‌معناي انجام ثواب و يا ارتكاب گناه نيست بلكه انتخاب ميان خوب و خوب‌تر است كه در اين انتخاب ملكات نفس، كه وي از زندگي دنيوي با خود به‌همراه برده است، مي‌توانند علل عمده باشند. بنابراين، اختيار برزخي تحت‌تاثير اختيار انسان در زندگي دنيوي و به‌عبارت‌ديگر در‌طول آن قرار دارد. از‌آنجا‌كه انسان معاصر از‌نظر معنوي با چالش‌هاي زيادي، مانند معناداري زندگي و رنج‌ها و دردهاي موجود در اين جهان، مواجه است، استكمال برزخي و لازمه آن، يعني اختيار در برزخ، مي‌تواند به معناداري زندگي و ايجاد روح اميدواري در انسان و انگيزه بيشتر براي گرايش به خير و نيكي و دستيابي به سعادت موثر باشد.
