Nature of Art in Fārābī’s Thought

فارابي پيرامون هنردر دو سطح سخن مي گويد. هنري كه در جامعه محقق مي شود، مشتمل بر هنرهاي محمود و هنرهاي پليد است. البته هنر فاضله و هنري كه به دست هنرمند مدينه فاضله توليد مي شود، صرفا هنر محمود است. هنر محمود يا هنر فاضله، خير و سعادت معقول را در قواي خيالي مجسم مي كند و در صدد ايجاد اعتدال در عواطف و احساسات است. در حالي كه هنر پليد،درست در نقطه مقابل قرار دارد و انفعالات و عواطف را به افراط و تفريط سوق مي دهد. از ديدگاه فارابي، جمهور، حقايق و سعادت معقول را از طريق تخيل ادراك مي نمايند. همچنين، ايجاد احساس و انفعال در مردم نيز به واسطه خيال صورت مي پذيرد. هدف قصواي مدينه فاضله، دستيابي جمهور به سعادت معقول است. از آنجا كه مردم بر اساس طبع يا عادت قادر به ادراك معقولات نيستند، سعادت معقول بايد از راه قواي خيالي به اذهان ايشان انتقال يابد. هنرمند فاضله مي تواند عقليات را با صور حسي و خيالي تجسمي سازد و از راه خيال، سعادت عقلي را به فهم آنان نزديك كند.

F?r?b? discusses art in two levels: art as it is, and art as it should be or the utopian art. Considering art as it is includes desirable and undesirable arts. But the utopian art or art as the working of the utopian artist consists only of desirable ones. When describing the desirable art, F?r?b? focuses on bringing goodness and happiness into imagination and moderating the feelings. Undesirable and wicked arts are just on the opposite side of desirable ones. They seek to corrupt thoughts and tend to immoderate sensual qualities and moods. In F?r?b?ʹs view, people understand the intelligible truths and meanings through imagination. Furthermore, the arousal of people’s feelings and emotions often originates from the imagination and the imaginary forms. The ultimate goal of the utopia is that the public achieve the intelligible happiness. Given that the public, based on their nature or habit, are not able to perceive the intelligible truths, the intelligible happiness should be transferred to their imagination. The utopian artist is able to embody the intelligible happiness using sensory and imaginary forms and he/she brings the intelligible happiness close to peopleʹs minds through their imagination.
