Historical Periods of Understanding “Other” in West and East with an Emphasis on Contemporary Scholars’ Views

هر تمدن يا فرهنگي در گذرگاه تاريخي خويش خواسته يا ناخواسته نوع نگاه خاص و متمايزي به «غير» و «ديگري» دارد. اين پژوهش، بر آن است تا دوره‌هاي تاريخي شناخت «ديگري» در غرب و شرق را بررسي و دوره‌بندي نمايد. كوشش شده است كه بر خلاف تقسيم‌بندي‌هاي رايج، از نگاه‌هاي صرفا سياسي فاصله گرفته و بيشتر از منظر فرهنگي و تمدني واكاوي شود. هم‌چنين تقسيم‌بندي‌ها نه صرفا‌ً بر حوادث تاريخي، بلكه بر وجود «ويژگي‌هاي مشترك» در شناخت «ديگري» در بستر تاريخي شرق و غرب استوار گردد. بر اين اساس روابط شرق و غرب به چهار دوره كلان تقسيم شده است. در نسبت غرب با شرق مي‌توان چهار دوره: عصر باستان، عصر ايمان، دوران قدرت دانش بنيان و عصر پسااستعماري را نام برد و در نسبت شرق ـ با تاكيد بر ايران ـ با غرب مي‌توان چهار دوره: عصر باستان، عصر ايمان، دوران آشفتگي و تحير و دوره نگاه واكنشي و انفعالي را ذكر كرد.

Each civilization or culture, intentionally or unintentionally, has a special and different view on “other” in its historical pathway. This research will study and per iodize the historical periods of understanding “other” in West and East. Despite common classification based on political views, this article will segregate the merely political views and analyze from cultural and civilizational aspects. Categorization is not only based on historical events, but also focused on “common characteristics” in understanding “other” in the historical context of East and West. Based on this history, the interrelationship between east and west is categorized in four macro era. According to the west- east relation this Periods are: 1) ancient era, 2) faith era, 3) the era of knowledge Based Power, 4) Post Colonial era. According to east-west relations, with a special emphasis on Iran, are: ancient era, faith era, confusion and chaos era, and the era of reaction and passive attitude.
