An Analysis of Foucauldian Power and Prison-Society in Caryl Churchill’s Softcops

ماهيت تياتر سياسي دهههاي هفتاد و هشتاد بريتانيا را مىتوان با پايداري آن در برابر گفتمانهاي ايديولوژيك قدرت حاكم- به ويژه حزب نومحافظهكار مارگارت تاچر- بررسي كرد. نمايشنامهنويسان انگليسي كه از انديشه ميشل فوكو تاثير بسيار گرفتهاند، با استناد به رويدادهاي تاريخ، تلاش كردهاند در برابر پنداشتهاي آرماني قدرت حاكم سكوت نكنند. از جمله آنها، كاريل چرچيل است كه در نمايشنامه پاسبانهاي مهربان (1???) با تاثيرپذيري از كتاب مراقبت و تنبيه (1???) ميشل فوكو و ترسيم فرانسه پس از انقلاب 1???، سرآغاز قدرت بورژوازي و تداوم سيطره آن را تا امروز نشان مىدهد. بنابراين، اين گفتار، در پرتو تاريخباوري نوين، تلاشي براي ترسيم رويكرد ضدقدرت و ضدتاچريسم چرچيل در پاسبانهاي مهربان است؛ و گفتار بررسي نيز مىكند كه چگونه در نمايشنامه بالا قدرت حاكم اروپاي غربي، شيوههاي تنبيهياش را از هراسافكني مستقيم، مجازات و شكنجه جسم، به هراسافكني نامستقيم، نظارت بر افراد، در جامعه تغيير ميدهد و از هرگونه اعتراض مدني جلوگيري مىكند.

The essence of British political theatre of the 1970s and 1980s might be re-read with regard to its resistance to the ideological discourses of the dominant power—especially those of the Neo-conservatism of Margaret Thatcher. English dramatists, who were under the substantial influence of Foucauldian subversive view on power and ideology, through dramatizing the historical events, attempted to stand against the ideology and idealism of the ruling power. They began to subvert the literary figures of the past in an attempt to create a new mentality. Among them, Caryl Churchill in her Softcops (1984) dramatised Foucault’s Discipline and Punish (1975) along with the French Revolution in order to depict the hegemony and domination of bourgeois power from the nineteenth century to the present. This paper is an attempt to illustrate Churchill’s anti-Thatcherite policy in the mentioned play and her coping with the how and why the ruling power substituted its explicit and violent strategies with soft and disciplinary strategies of surveillance for making obedient subjects to confront and suppress any potential civil objection.
