وجود احاديث متعارض در زمان ايمه عليهم السلام شيعيان را واداشت تا از امامان براي حل اين مشكل راه-كار بطلبند. اولين راهكار امامان شيعه ارايه مرجحاتي بود كه بر اساس آن مي بايست يكي از روايات را ترجيح داد و ديگري را رها كرد. اين مرجحات گاه به احوال راوي و گاه به متن حديث و عرضه آن بر كتاب و سنت و گاه به امور خارجي ديگر بازمي گشت. دادن مجوز به مخاطب براي انتخاب يكي از متعارضين از روي علم، تخيير، ارجا و رجوع به اخير، از ديگر راه كارهاي امامان شيعه به شيعيان در مواجه با احاديث متعارض بوده است.

Existence ofcontradictoryhadiths during the time ofthe Imams (a.s.) made the Shiites seek solutions for this problem from the Imams. As the first solution, the Shiites’ Imams offered some preferences on the basis of which one of the narrations had to be preferred and otherswere to be abandoned. At times, these preferences were related to the status of the narrator; sometimes, they dealt with text of hadith and its relationship with the Quran and sunnah; and some other times, they were connected with some other factors.Allowing the addressee to choose one of these contradictory cases on the basis ofscientific understanding, takhyyr (choosing between two or more alternatives), and reference to the latest caseare some the other solutions Shiites received from their Imams in order to deal with contradictory thehadiths.
