ايراني كيست و وجوه مشخصه آن كدام است؟ عناصر و مولفه‎هاي اساسي فرهنگ و هويت ايراني چيست؟ چرا به‎رغم اينكه قلمرو ايراني در طول تاريخ، سرزمين چندگانگي فرهنگ‎ها و تنوع و تحوّل مداوم آنها بود، يك جريان گسترده فرهنگي بر آن حاكم بوده و در عين كثرت ظاهري، وحدتي دروني موجب حفظ و بقاي آن شده است؟ بي‎شك، اسلام، ميراثي كه از پيامبر گرامي به‎جاي‎ماند، يكي از عناصر اصلي و سازنده هويت امروز ماست؛ به گونه‎اي كه وقتي از فرهنگ ايراني ـ اسلامي سخن به‎ميان‎مي‎آيد، منظور آن نظام فرهنگي است كه عناصر ديگر را نيز در خود مي‎گنجاند، زيرا ملاك خودي‎بودن در اين فرهنگ، انطباق‎پذيري آن با ارزش‌هاي توحيدي يا دست‎كم عدم‎مبانيت با آن است. در مقاله حاضر، ضمن تشريح رابطه عنصر اسلاميت و ايرانيت از منظري تاريخي، چگونگيِ تكوين و تطوّر فرهنگ ايراني، اسلامي، تثبيت و نهادينه‎شدن و سرانجام ركود و افول آن را مورد توجه قرار‎داده‎ايم. نتايج حاصل از نوشتار حاضر نشان‎دهنده آن است كه ايرانيان به عنوان حلقه واسط، در تفكيك اسلام از عرب و سازگاري انديشه‎هاي ايراني و اسلامي و ارتقا و اعتلاي آن نقش مهمي ايفا‎كردند و گذشته باستاني را با دين جديد پيوند زدند؛ به گونه‎اي كه آميختگي فرهنگ اسلام و ايران به حدي است كه حتي براي شناخت تحولات تاريخ ايران، شناخت اسلام لازم و ضروري است.

What is the Iranian Identity and what are its major features? What are the basic elements and constituents of Iranian cultural identity? What causes made Iranian identity hold its internal unity throughout several centuries while it has continually been facing a diversity of cultures? These are the main questions which this study seeks to find answers for. Actually, it addresses a complicated theme in Iranian cultural history, the conceptual structure of the Iranian identity in post-Islamic era. Focusing on the Islamic characteristics of Iranian identity it proposes a historical approach to the study of the subject. This aim has been met through giving an explanation of the relation between Islamic and Iranian elements of Iranian identity. The results of the study show that the Iranian people, as an intermediate agent, have played a very important role in conciliating the Iranian and Islamic ideas. They also succeeded to make a brilliant synthesis of their ancient cultural legacy and the new religion. The Islamic part of this synthesis was so important, without a sufficient understanding of which we would not be able to reach an acceptable explanation of Iranian historical developments during the Islamic period.
