آرمانشهرها و آرمان گرايي در طول تاريخ از اهميت فراگيري برخوردار بوده اند؛ چنانچه آرمانشهر در ديدگاهي جهان شمول، جلوه اي از خواستها و آرمانهاي بشري است تا بتواند تمنيّات و روياهاي خويش را در ساختار اجتماعي و كالبدي شهر به عينيّت برساند. بر همين اساس است كه هر انديشمند بر حسب حوزه انديشه انتقادي خود، ويژگيها و شاخصه هاي آرمانشهر را از ديدگاهي خاص مورد ارزيابي قرار داده است. راست است كه انديشه متفكّر و نقّاد، و شرايط و مقتضيّات تاريخي، اجتماعي و فرهنگي، در بيان و تعيين ويژگيها و حتي نوع رويكرد به مفاهيم شهر آرماني تاثير دارد؛ و اين چنين است كه رويكردهاي متفاوتي در برخورد با اين مقوله ذهن بشر را به خود معطوف داشته است. روش تحقيق پژوهش حاضر توصيفي و تحليلي است كه از ابزار گرداوري داده شامل مطالعات كتابخانه اي و روش اسنادي بهره برده است. نتايج تحقيق نشان مي دهد كه آرمانشهر غربي در جستجوي همه ابعاد در عالم مادي و بطور كامل تر در مقام مصداق «غار افلاطوني» است. در اين تمثيل، عروج ذهن از بخش هاي پايين خط به بخش هاي بالاتر، پيشرفتي شناخت شناسي است و ذهن در جريان مستمري از تكامل، از حالت شناخت نابسنده به شناخت كافي دست مي يابد. همچنين آرمانشهر ايراني، يك آرمانشهر شيعي است كه وابسته به جامعه آرماني اسلامي و مدينه فاضله مهدوي دارد كه خصوصيات آن به تفصيل اشاره شده است.
