Architecture, Land, and Man Rereading and Criticizing Pirnia’s Suggested Principles for Iranian Architecture

محمدكريم پيرنيا، از برجسته‌ترين تاريخ‌پژوهان معماري ايران، دو دستاورد بزرگ به نام اصول معماري ايران و سبك‌شناسي معماري ايراني داشت. در اين مقاله، به بررسي اصول پيشنهادي او براي معماري ايراني ‌پرداخته شده است. به اين منظور، ابتدا چگونگي تكوين و تكميل اصول پنج گانه او در طي زمان نشان داده شده، سپس سخن او درباره يكايك اصول ها كه در منابع گوناگون پراكنده است، از منابع اصيل جمع آوري و به زباني منسجم بيان گرديده است. در ادامه مقاله، در كليات اين اصول تامل، و شايستگي آن ها براي تبيين معماري ايراني ‌سنجيده شده است. نگارندگان، انگيزه‌هاي پيرنيا را از طرح آن ها و نيز مفروضات و دلالت‌هاي ضمني آن ها را بررسي و آن ها را نقد كرده اند. در پايان نشان داده شده كه تركيب و محتواي كنوني اين اصول، باطن و ظاهري دارد. ظاهر آن ها متناسب با نيازهاي زمانه پيرنياست و ممكن است امروزه به كار محققان معماري ايران نيايد و معتبر نباشد، اما باطن آن ها ابزارهايي ارزنده براي شناسايي و فهم معماري ايراني در بستر فرهنگ ايراني است. در اين صورت، مي توان اصول پيرنيا را بازخواني كرد و در خدمت تعميق تحقيق در تاريخ معماري ايران درآورد.

Mohammad-Karim Pirnia, as one of the most prominent scholars of the history of Iranian architecture, had two major achievements: specifying the principles of Iranian architecture and the stylistics of Iranian architecture. In this article we will discuss his suggested principles for Iranian architecture. For this purpose, we will first show how his five principles have evolved and completed through time. Following that, we will mention his comments on each principle which we have gathered from their original but widely spread sources and will present them in integrated and coherent terms. In another section of the article, we will deliberate upon the entirety of these principles and evaluate their worthiness for specifying Iranian architecture. We will strive to study and criticize Pirnia’s motivations for proposing them and their assumptions, and tacit implications. Finally, we will show that the current order and content of these principles have an outer and inner side. Their appearance is in accordance with the necessities of Pirnia’s time and it is possible that they may not be suitable or credible for Iranian architectural historians of our time; but their inner side is a valuable element for identifying and understanding Iranian architecture in the context of Iranian culture. In this case, we will be able to reread Pirnia’s principles and use them to serve the improvement of research on the history of Iranian architecture and its development.
