درباره قرآن كريم از زمان نزول آن مسيله‌اي به عنوان ظاهر و باطن مطرح شده كه هريك، مدار بحث و گفتگوهاي بسياري قرار گرفته است. هدف اين نوشتار، بررسي برخي آسيب‌ها در استفاده از قرآن كريم در جهت ظاهر و يا باطن است. اولين آسيب افراط و يا تفريط است. برخي گفته‌اند كه قرآن براي امت اسلامي در همه امور كفايت مي‌كند و با اين سخن ضرورت معلم و مبين را در كنار قرآن انكار كرده‌اند. در مقابل برخي نظر داده‌اند كه ظاهر قرآن حجت نيست و آنچه از درك ظاهر براي غيرمعصوم حاصل مي‌شود، بدون تاييد مقام عصمت جايگاهي در حوزه دانش وجود ندارد. در اين زمينه در اين مقاله چنين استدلال مي‌شود: ظاهر قرآن كريم قابل درك و حجت است؛ فهم ظاهر قرآن درجات و مراتبي دارد؛ مجازهاي به كار رفته در قرآن از ظاهر محسوب مي‌گردد؛ امت اسلامي براي درك حقايق دين در كنار قرآن نيازمند به رسول اكرم و عترت نوراني او هستند؛ باطن قرآن از نظر بعضي به معناي درك ژرفاي متن و در نظر برخي ديگر به معناي حقيقتي است كه الفاظ مستقلاً بدان دلالت ندارند؛ باطن قرآن كريم به هر معنا كه باشد، نفي ظاهر نمي‌كند؛ بلكه معارفي افزون بر آن است.
