نجيب محفوظ، نويسنده معاصر مصري، يكي از نويسندگان برجسته در ادبيات داستاني در جهان عرب در قرن بيستم است. او در رمان‌هايش مصر و فراز و فرود حوادث آن كشور را با مهارتي كم‌نظير به‌تصوير كشيده است؛ جامعه‌اي كه از فقر و ناآگاهي فراوان در رنج بوده است. رمان‌هاي محفوظ، تصوير آمال و آلام مردم اين سرزمين است. زنان از مهم‌ترين نقش‌آفرينان ‌‌قصه‌هاي او هستند. وي از پس سيماي زنان، جامعه معاصر خويش را به نقد كشيده است. اين جستار بر آن ‌است با شيوه توصيفي‌ـ تحليلي به بررسي مسايل زنان در جزر و مدّ حوادث ‌قصه‌هاي نجيب محفوظ بپردازد و تصويري از زن عرب معاصر را از لابه‌لاي برخي رمان‌هاي او ارايه دهد. دستاورد اين پژوهش بيانگر آن است كه از زن و چيستي و رسالت او در جامعه ـ در گستره رمان‌هاي محفوظ‌ـ، تصويري درست و گويا ارايه نشده است؛ به‌طوري ‌كه او همواره از فقر، فساد اخلاقي، ناپايداريِ مباني نهاد خانواده و چيرگيِ تباه‌كننده سياستمداران فاسد در رنج بوده است. زنان مصر در رمان‌هاي او، در ميان زياده‌روي و كم‌روي نظام ارزشي جامعه، هميشه آزرده‌خاطر و پريشان‌حال هستند. آنها در چنبره نقطه گذار از سنّت به مدرنيته و در برزخ ميان قديم و جديد، در جست‌وجوي تعريفي نو از ارزش‌هاي اجتماعي و نظام خانواده هستند كه هم با حقايق تاريخي گذشته و هم با تاريخ كنوني‌شان هم‌سويي داشته باشد؛ اما آنها بيشتر از دستيابي به اين آرزو ناكام مي‌مانند.

Najib Mahfuz, the Egyptian contemporary author, is one of the well-known authors in the Persian literature in the Arab World in 20th century. His novels depicted the bad situations of Egypt with special skills; the country which was suffered from poverty, ignorance and less knowledge as well, his novels showed the situations of the people of this country. In his works, women are the most important characters and based on these characters, he criticized his contemporary society. The aim of this paper is to study the role of women and their problems in the works of Mahfuz by the analytical – descriptive method and also show the picture of Arabic contemporary women. The main result of this paper is that there is limited evidence about the role of women and their Resalat (mission/tasks) within this kind of society in the works of Mahfuz; as he suffered the problems such as poverty, ethical corruption, and instability of the family foundations and the domination of dishonored politicians. Women of Egypt in his novels, between indulgence and surfeit of the society, are constantly annoyed and suffered from problems. They seek a new definition of the social values and the family system within the transient point from tradition into modernity or among the new and old world as this definition must be compatible with the historical facts of the past and present times; however, this aim did not achieve for most of them.
