از مباحث مهم در معرفت‌شناسي، تاثير عوامل غيرمعرفتي بر شكل‌گيري معرفت، به‌ويژه تاثير اراده بر معرفت است. صدرا، به دليل اتخاذ مبناي اصالت وجود و تشكيك و ...، برخلاف نگاه پيشينيان، تحليلي دقيق از نسبت اراده و معرفت داده است. بر اساس نگاه او، در حوزه ادراكات حضوري، بنا بر حركت اشتداديِ نفس انساني متناسب با سعه وجودي و تكامل انساني كه فرآيندي ارادي است، درك حضوري انسان وضوح و اشتدادي متناسب پيدا مي‌كند. در حوزه ادراكات حصولي انسان، اعم از ادراكات جزيي و كلي، در نگاه صدرا دو تحليل مطرح مي‌شود كه در هر دو، اراده انسان در شكل‌گيري معرفت نقش‌آفرين است. در تحليل نخست، نفس با تكامل ارادي و اختياري خود مستعد پذيرش صور ادراكي از مبادي عاليه وجود يا عقل فعال مي‌شود؛ و در تحليل دوم اين نفس انساني است كه با تكامل جوهري خود و در سايه اتحاد با عقل فعال، اين ادراكات را انشا مي‌كند و مواجهه با واقعيت صرفاً زمينه‌ساز اين انشاي ارادي انسان است.
