Umberto Eco and the Semiotic Foundation of Interpretation

اومبرتو اكو با الهام از نگرش‌هاي زبان‌شناختي يلْمْسلف و تاثيرپذيري از پرس در باب وجه تفسيري نشانه، كه حاصل تاملات وي در باب معناپردازي نامحدود است، كوشيده است با تكيه بر روش‌شناسي ساختگرا و پراگماتيسم آمريكايي نظرات بديعي در باب چگونگي تاويل متن به‌دست ‌دهد. او با طرح موضوع «بنيان‌هاي نشانه‌شناختي تاويل» نشان مي‌دهد كه تاويل به مثابه امري تلقي مي‌شود كه از تعامل خواننده و متن شكل مي‌گيرد؛ به همين دليل تاويل الزاماً در محدوده نيّت مولف باقي نمي‌ماند و از آن فراتر مي‌رود. بر اين اساس مقاله حاضر مي‌كوشد ضمن بررسي خاستگاه‌هاي نظري انديشه اكو، استدلال‌هاي وي را در اين باره بررسي و تحليل كند. در اين بررسي مشخص مي‌شود كه تاويل اصيل در برابر تاويل نابه‌هنجار - كه اساساً مستلزم خوانشي سوژه‌محور است- ناشي از نوعي آزادي در عين محدوديت است؛ به بياني سرراست‌تر، متن بر اساس قابليت‌هاي نشانه‌شناختي خود، خواننده را در مسيرهاي مشخصي از جريان تاويل پيش‌ مي‌برد؛ مسيرهايي كه مي توان با مطالعه نشانه‌شناختي اثر آن‌ها را پيش‌بيني و تبيين كرد.

Inspired by Hjelmslev’s linguistic insights, and influenced by Peirce’s work on the interpretive dimension of the sign, which is the outcome of his contemplations on unlimited semiosis, Umberto Eco has tried to put forward innovative ideas on the ways in which the interpretation of the text takes place. Drawing on structuralist methodology and American pragmatism, Eco offers a semiotic foundation for interpretation and, consequently, shows that interpretation is the result of the reader’s interaction with the text. Therefore, interpretation is by no means restricted to intentio auctoris (the author’s intention), and moves beyond such limitations. This article attempts to examine the theoretical origins of Eco’s thought as well as the arguments deriving from these origins. It demonstrates that, in contrast to ‘aberrant interpretation’, which requires a subject-oriented reading, ‘authentic interpretation’ results from the reader’s restricted freedom. In other words, thanks to its semiotic possibilities, the text forces the reader to move in certain interpretive directions which could be predicted and explicated through the semiotic analysis of the text.
