حالات عاطفي يكي از مهم‌ترين رفتارهاي انسان هستند كه به دليل ويژگي خاصشان، در همه رفتارها و تصميم‌گيري‌هاي او تأثير مي‌گذارند. مارتا كريون نوسبام يكي از فلاسفه معاصر غرب است كه بررسي فلسفي عاطفه را در دستور كار خود قرار داده است. وي مي‌كوشد در دنياي معاصر غرب، كه اخلاق پايه‌هاي اصلي خود را از دست داده، عاطفه را كه مؤلفه‌اي انساني است به عنوان زيربنايي براي اخلاق معرفي كند. بدين‌منظور نظريه شناختي ارزشي عواطف را پايه‌ريزي كرده، عواطف را به عنوان مؤلفه‌اي انساني بررسي مي‌كند. اين مقاله عهده‌دار بررسي نحوه شناختي بودن عواطف است. مشخصات يا ويژگي‌هاي شناختي بودن عواطف چيست؟ آيا مراد از شناختي بودن آگاهانه بودن يا معقول بودن است؟ عواطف نه آگاهانه هستند و نه معقول؛ عواطف حاصل فعاليت اموري ناخودآگاه در انديشه بشر هستند. هنجارهاي اجتماعي، شرايط فيزيكي، باورهاي متافيزيكي، زبان و عادات روزمره در كنار عواطف و ادراكات تاريخي شخص و دريافت‌هاي حسي او، ارزش‌هايي را براي فرد شكل مي‌دهند كه به صدور احكام ارزشيابانه مي‌انجامد

Emotional modes are among mans most important behaviors and influence all his behaviors and decision makings due to their particular features.  Martha Craven Nussbaum is a contemporary western philosopher who has put on her agenda the philosophical study of emotion. He tries to define emotion, which is a human component, as a basis for ethics in contemporary western where ethics has lost his main bases. To this end, she formulates the value cognitive theory of emotions and studies emotions as human component. The present paper seeks to investigate the question how emotions are cognitive. What are the parameters and features of emotions as considered cognitive? Does the fact that emotions are cognitive mean that they are conscious and reasonable? Emotions are neither conscious nor reasonable rather, they are the outcome of unconscious affairs in mans mind. Social norms, physical conditions, metaphysical beliefs, language and everyday habits along with individuals emotions, historical perceptions and sensory comprehensions form some values for him/her, which result in issuing value seeking orders.
