Soft-Tissue Surgery Without Prophylactic Antibiotics

Prophylactic antibiotics in elective soft-tissue surgeries has become to a routine orthopedic procedure in most hospitals. As a controversial issue, there have been variable reports about infection prophylaxsis. On the one hand the drugʹs systemic side effects and limitations and on the other hand infection morbidity and expense of long term antibiotic therapy have made prophylactic antibiotic administration the issue of disscusions. In this prospective study we studied 456 patients who had elective soft-tissue surgery without any antibiotics either before or after surgery. In 453 surgeries we encountered only 2 suture infections but no case with discharge, cellulitis, or absess. As our results show, due to rare incidence of infection we donʹt need to use prophylactic antibiotics in elective soft-tissue surgery in steril conditions.
