Post Intratracheal Intubation Sore Throat Using Macintosh Laryngoscope and Firboptic Bronchoscope

There are some contraversies regarding sore throat rates following use of laryngoscopes. We compared the post-intratracheal intubation sore throat rate using a Macintosh laryngoscope and fiberoptic bronchoscope. On the elective surgery candidates, 97 were randomly selected and were divided to two groups of 45 (Macintosh laryngoscope) and 52 (fiberoptic laryngoscope). Demographic data were obtained of their records. Surgery period, intubation period, bucking and sore throat rate after intubation were measured. Surgery periods in Macintosh and Fiberoptic group were 91.8± 49.5 and 96.2± 46.2 minutes respectively, which did not show any significant difference. Bucking was detected in 13% and 10% of control groups and was not significantly different. Sore throat rates had significant difference between both groups. Intubation period using fiberoptic bronchoscope was significantly higher than that of the Macintosh laryngoscope (p<0.05).
