Accuracy of Sonography In Acute Appendicitis

Acute abdomen and its diagnosis is one of the important emergencies in sugical wards. Sonography is safe to diagnosis acute appendicitis. We had 706 patients, 49.5% men and 50.5% woman. Mean age was 25.2±11.5 yrs. All patients had abdominal sonography for diagnosis appendicitis. A pathologist confirmed the diagnosis after surgery. Patients with BMI of more than 30 were excluded from the study. For all of the patients, clinical signs, laboratory and pathology results were registered. 73.3% of patients had appendicitis (confirmed by pathologist) and sonography diagnosis was 47.5%. Sensitivity of sonography in appendicitis was 52.77% and specifity was 66.6% . Sonography for diagnosis of acute appendicitis is not reliable but is a very good tool to rule out other diagnose.
