Prevalence Rate and Related Factors of Depression in Medical Students

Depression is the most common psychological disorders. Almost two-thirds of the cases consider of suicide and 10 to 15 percent of them commit pseudosuicide. Prevalence rate(PR) of depression of 9.1 to 44.1 percent were reported by several studies. We decided to assess PR and of depression in medical students in Tehran. This study was cross-sectional and 197 medical students were selected. Depression signs were diagnosed by Beck questionnaire (long form). Data entry with SPSS for windows (version 10.0) software were analyzed by descriptive and analytic statistics. Mean age was 22.4 years (standard deviation= 10.7.) PR of depression signs was 28.9 percent (80.7 percent mild, 15.8 percent moderate, and 3.5 percent severe). This study showed no statistically significant variations among, age, sex, or marital status (P>0.05). Although in this study moderate and severe depressed students were rare, medical students in any community must be refered to psychological clinics for identifying risk factors and to take preventive measures.
