Morphological and Morphometrical Motoneuron Changes During Early Period Of Sciatic Nerve Axotomy

This study investigated the early effect of sciatic nerve axotomy on spinal motoneuron changes in newborn rats. Pup rats (age=5 days, N=35) were anesthesized by hypothermia. Left sciatic nerves were transected (the right side used as controls). The operated animals were sacrificed at 1,3,6,12,24,48 and 72 hours after axotomy. L4-L6 segments of the spinal cord were sampled and processed for histological and ultrastractural studies. Transverse serial sections (7gm) were prepared and stained with cresyl fast violet for morphometric study. The number of motoneurons in the control and experimental slides were counted and analysis of by student t-test and Analyze Variance.
