Analysis of alarming signs and symptoms on early clinical diagnosis and outcome of the patients with spinal cord tumors (SCT)

Spinal cord tumors (SCT) are one of the rare but still important causes of neurological deficit of limbs. Clinical presentations of these tumors are so different that sometimes diagnosis is difficult. In spite of very sophisticated method of diagnosis still attention to clinical presentation is the best way for diagnosis. Early diagnosis of spinal cord tumors can prevent permanent neurological problem. In this study we are trying to shown the benefits of early clinical diagnosis of alarming sign and symptoms on outcome of the patients with of spinal cords tumors. All of the 30 patients with SCT during four years from March 1997 till March 2001 have been studies. 53% of the patients were female and 47% were male.26.8% of the patients were in 51-60 years group. The most common pathology were meningioma and the most common site were thoracic spine.Paresia-Plegia with 21.8% was the most presenting sign. All of the tumors of the thoracic and cervical spine presented with neurological problem but the most common sign of lumbar and lumbosacral spine was pain and paresthsis.After 3 month 10% of the patients did not have any improvement, 60% have only one grade improvements in Franke scale and 30% did not have any improvement. However attention to qualities of the pain and Babenski and Lhermitte signs can improve the results of operation and delay of diagnosis can prevent good recovery of the patients with SCT.
