Analysis of the comprehensive nursing final exam in Shahroud faculty of medical sciences

Evaluation is an integrate part of any educational institute. Every exam is considered as a tool for measurement and should be valid and reliable. Statistics and some formula in mathematics can be applied to assess a given examʹs validity and reliability. ln this descriptive study, discrimination index and difficulty index of each question and reliability and validity of all six parts of exam were determined separately. Moreover the distracting options of each question were also analyzed. The results showed that most of the questions were categorized as easy or moderate. Community health nursing and obstetrics nursing have the highest rate of easy questions (70% & 68%). The discrimination index of the first part of the medical surgical questions was the highest and of the community health nursing was the lowest. To determine the correlation of the different parts of the exam, which shows the validity of the exam. two methods have been used. The first method was split halves and the second was kuder-Richardson or (KR20). KR20 gave a higher figure in comparison to the split halves methods. Since KR20 method is only suitable for true/false MCQs, the figures obtained by split- halves method seem to be more reliable. Using this method , medical surgical nursing part 1 and psychiatric nursing have the highest and lowest validity. lt can be concluded that questions used in our institute should be revised and standardized.
