Background and aim: Nosocomial infection (N.I) is an intensive care unit common problem. Quality of care procedure performance has an effective role in suffering from N.I. This descriptive study was performed to determine quality of infection control standards in intensive care unit in one of the Hamadanʹs hospitals.
Methods: The samples consisted of patients that confined to bed in ICU, selected by convenience sampling method. Data was collected by check lists concerning instruments and process of urinary catheterization, tracheal intubation, air way suctioning, vein catheterization, dressing of wound, care of vein catheters and care of patients that breath by ventilator.
Results:The results showed that accomplishing equipment standards
for infection control related to urinary catheterization (90%), tracheal intubation (74.8%), venous catheterization (100%) and wound dressing (93.5%) was acceptable and implementing standards related to airway suctioning (91.4%) was unacceptable. Implementing standards related to urinary catheterization (80%), venous catheterization (51.4%), care of venous catheter (75%), care of patient that breath by ventilator (53.3%) and wound dressing (73.3%) were acceptable but related to tracheal catheterization (73.3%) and airway suctioning (93.9%) were unacceptable.
Conclusion: Although, quality of performance in many of the assessed procedures was acceptable, but the quality of implementing the standards of performance was less than quality of equipment standards. In some cases incorrect performance of the procedures, was related to not use of sterile gloves or sets. The other causes probably were deficiency of staff, knowledge deficiency, and lack of perception of importance of the infection control standards. Therefore the infection control in ICU requires firstly a better control of personnel and secondly taking necessary actions to eliminate the causes.
