Epidemioloy of mental disorders among over 15 years old population in rural and urban area of Borujen, 1994

This retrospective cross sectional analytical and descriptive study v, as performed to determine the mental disorders prevalence among over fifteen years old in rural and urban people in Borujen. The relationship between mental disorders prevalence and age, sex, marital status, educational level as well as occupation was also determined. The sample consisted of 450 randomly selected subjects. Every subject was evaluated and diagnosed with SCL-90-R screening test and clinical interview by a psychiatrist. The results showed that 18.33% of the sample complained of some type of mental disorders. The prevalence of various mental disorders was as fallows: mood disorders 6.31% in men and 15.76% in women; anxiety disorders 0.52% in men and 5.76% in women; eschizophernia 1.05% in men and 0.76% in women; psychosomatic disorders 0.52% in men and 1.15% in women; somatoform disorders 1.15% in women; adjustment disorders 0.38% in women and others 0.52%. The most prevalent complaint of mood disorders (single episode and recurrent) was major depression (4.66%) and of the anxiety disorders was free-floating anxiety (1.55%) in both sexes. The mental disorders were significantly higher in women, in uneducated or low educated, in housewives, in married, and in large families. Also the disorders was higher among 25-44 years old subjects than other age groups. Considering these results and the results of other studies in the country, it seems that mental disorders need special attention.
