شناخت دقيق آراي خاورشناسان درباره معارف قرآني و نقد علمي ديدگاه‌هاي آنان، ضرورتي انكارناپذير براي ما مسلمانان است. در پژوهش حاضر تلاش شده است ديدگاه‌هاي فايرستون درباره آياتِ جهاد، نقل، تحليل و نقد شود. تحقيقات فايرستون درباره اين موضوع، از پژوهش بسيار او در منابع اسلامي حكايت دارد. نكته محوري ديدگاه او درباره آيات جهاد، توجه‌دادن به تناقض اين آيات با يكديگر، در جواز و منع جنگ و چندگانگي روش پيشنهادي قرآن در برخورد با دشمنان اسلام است. بي‌توجهي به سياق آيات، دخالت‌ندادن زمينه‌هاي نزول آيه و استفاده‌نكردن از كلام معصومان سبب شده است فايرستون در ميان آيات جهاد به تناقض قائل شود.

The exact understanding of orientalists views on the Quranic teachings and scientific criticism of them is an undeniable necessity for the Muslims. The present research attempts to quote, analyze, and criticize Firestones viewpoints on holy war verses. Firestones researches on holy war verses indicate his considerable study of Islamic sources. The central point of his view on holy war is his drawing attention to the controversies among the verses on allowing or forbidding war and the different methods of dealing with enemies of Islam proposed in the Quran. Not paying attention to the context of the verses, ignoring the grounds of revelation of the verses, and not using the words of Infallible Imams are the main reasons of Firestones maintaining that there is controversy among holy war verses.
