Intraspecific variations of the Great Jird (Rhombomys opimus)in the Turkmen Plain

The 97 Rhombomys opimus specimens were collected from Turkmen Plain. The specimens were subjected to morphologic and morphometric experiment. It was revealed that the samples belong to Rhombomys opimus species and Rhombomys opimus sodalis sub-species. No other sub-species was detected during the study. Intraspecific variation was studied using 36 cranial, skeletal, and morphological characteristics. The results showed that Rhombomys opimus in Turkmen plain having sexual dimorphism. Maximum characteristic growth (including: morphological, cranial and skeletal characteristic) belong to Kalnagaf specimens and minimum characteristic growth belong to Duzolom specimens. It correlated to genetic drift and populations constitution with genotype varied that infact shows the founder effect role.
