Estimation of apricot fruit volume and fresh weight from fruit diameter

Fruit growth is a function of volume (or weight) increase. Fruit diameter by itself is generally a poor measure of fruit growth, because it is not linearly related to volume or weight. Experimentally, transform of non-destructive fruit diameter data to fruit volume and weight is desirable. In order to follow up this purpose, data were collected from mature trees of 11 Iranian apricot cultivars. There were 4 trees in each cultivars. On each tree eight fruits from the middle canopy zone were randomly sampled at 10-day intervals from 30 days after full bloom until fruit harvest (ripening time). Fruit diameter, volume, and fresh weight were measured. Data was used to build up equations for estimating fruit volume and fruit fresh weight from non-destructive fruit diameter measurements. Based on total cultivars data, strong relationships were observed between fruit diameter with fruit volume Y = -1.43 + 3.18X (R = 0.961) and fruit diameter with fresh weight Y = -1.53 + 3.29X (R2 = 0.974). The general relationships are applicable for estimate of fruit volume and weight of total apricot cultivars under different condition and orchard managements.
