Science and Religion Conflict in 19th Century

علم و دين كه هر دو سابقه‌اي طولاني در حيات بشر دارند، در تاريخ بلند خود، در كنار يك‌ديگر بر زندگي او تأثيرگذار بوده‌اند و تقريباً هيچ ناسازگاري‌اي بينشان وجود نداشته. پيش‌رفت وسيع علوم كه از قرن هفدهم آغاز شد، به‌تدريج دانش مندان را به اكتشافاتي رساند كه متفاوت و گاه متعارض با آموزه‌هاي رسمي دين بود. اين امر موجب پيدايش نزاع ميان علم و دين شد، تاآن‌جا كه عالمان دين و دانش‌مندان به تخطئة آراي يك‌ديگر پرداختند. اين نزاع در قرن هفدهم وضعيت متفاوتي يافت، چرا كه در اين قرن هم دين و هم علم معناي جديدي يافته بود. علم، تا پيش از اين قرن، هويتي مستقل از فلسفه، اخلاق و الهيات نداشت و دين نيز كه تا پيش از عصر روشن‌گري بر ايمان استوار بود در اين عصر به ‌سمت عقل سوق يافت و صدق و كذب گزاره‌هاي آن مطمح نظر قرار گرفت. با شكل‌گيري هويت مستقل علم و دين، نزاع ميان آن دو يكي از مباحث مهم قرن نوزدهم شد؛ موضوعي كه در اين مقاله بررسي خواهد شد.

Having long history in human life, science and religion in their long history have influenced it and approximately there was no contradiction. The progress of sciences which started since 17th led scientists to some discoveries deferent from and sometimes in opposition to the formal doctrines of religion in so far as the clerics and scientists started criticizing the views of each other. In 17th century because of new meanings science and religion the conflict between them changed. Before that time science had no nature independent from philosophy, ethics and theology and the religion which was based on faith before Enlightenment, in that age turned to the reason and the truth and falseness of its propositions started to be assessed. Because of getting two new different and separated natures, the conflict between science and religion became one of the important debates of 19th century, the subject that will be discussed in this article
