Etymology of the Quranic word HMD (praise) in the Semitic languages

واژه حمد يكي از واژگان كليدي در حوزه مفاهيم عبادي در قرآن كريم است. اين واژه در فرهنگ لغات عربي و تفاسير قرآن به لحاظ معناي صريح به ثناء و ستايش تفسير شده است، اما به لحاظ معناهاي جانبي در منابع سنتي رابطه آن با معناي شكر و سپاس و هم چنين معناي مدح محل بحث بوده است. به نظر مي رسد با توجه به ابهام مطرح در معناي اين ماده، خصوصاً در حوزه معاني جانبي (و نه معناي صريح) تدقيق معناي آن با روش هاي نوين معناشناختي براي درك ملموس تر آن ضرورت دارد. در اين مقاله ماده حمد با رويكرد زبان شناسي تاريخي- تطبيقي و با استفاده از منابع زبان هاي سامي ريشه شناسي شده و در نهايت مشخص شده است كه معناي اشتياق معناي كهن تري است كه در دوره اي متقدم در زبان سامي از اين ريشه فهميده مي شده، كاربرد اين ماده در معناي اشتياق در متون زبان هاي شاخه شمالي مركزي از زبان هاي سامي ثبت شده است

Hamd’ is one of the key words in the context of worship in the Holy Quran. The word in Arabic dictionaries and Qur'anic exegeses interpreted to ‘praise’ in view to denotation meaning, And in view to connotation, its relationship with a sense of ‘ShKR’ (thank) and ‘MDH’ (praise) also been debated. It seems that due to the uncertainty raised in this matter, especially in the connotation (not in the denotation sense) it is necessary to study its exact meaning with new semantic methods to understand it more tangible. The article follows the approach of historical-comparative linguistics to reach the etymology of the stem ‘HMD’ in the Semitic language sources, and finally, it has been found that the more ancient meaning of this root that was being understood in the preceding period of the Semitic language was ‘desire’. The use of this stem in the sense of ‘desire’ has been recorded in the texts of the central northern branch of Semitic languages.
