بي ترديد عنوان كتاب نقش مؤثري در جلب نظر مخاطبان دارد؛ مخاطباني كه در نخستين صفحه هاي كتاب در جست و جوي دليل پيدايش آن اند. هدف ها و پرسش هايي كه نويسنده در اين صفحه ها مطرح مي كند به نحوي ذهن خواننده را درگير خود كرده و او را بيش تر به خواندن كتاب ترغيب مي كند. گاهي اين ترغيب با نوعي حس شگفتي و تحسين نيز در هم مي آميزد، زيرا نويسنده موفق شده است طبقه بندي ها و ساختارهاي قوام يافتۀ ذهن خواننده را با نوعي آشنايي زدايي در هم بشكند. كتاب نقد و نظريه هاي ادبي معاصر از اين گونه كتاب هاست؛ زيرا به نظر مي رسد مؤلفش در نظر دارد، در كتابي با حجم بسيار كم، به نحوي جامع و كامل طيف گسترده و گوناگوني از موضوعات را معرفي كند، به چندين هدف دست يابد و هم زمان به پرسش هايي پاسخ دهد كه با اين اهداف مناسبت چنداني ندارند. نوشتۀ پيش رو بر آن است تا با مطالعۀ سطح هاي گوناگون اين كتاب، افزون بر بررسي ميزان دسترسي نويسنده به هدف هايش و پاي بندي به قرارداد خوانش، نحوة پاسخ گويي او به پرسش ها و درجۀ اعتبار پاسخ ها را نيز بسنجد

An audience who is attracted to a book by its title will undoubtedly search the first pages of the book for the grounds justifying their attraction. The objectives and questions suggested by the author will in some way involve the minds of the readers and encourage them to read the book. Sometimes this encouragement is combined with a sense of wonder and fascination, as the author may have managed to break the classifications and structures formed in the minds of the readers through a mechanism of defamiliarization. The book entitled Contemporary literary theories and critique is an example of this sort, which intends to comprehensively introduce a diverse range of topics in a very compact volume, to achieve several goals, and simultaneously to address some questions, which do not perfectly match the presented goals. The aim of this review is to assess the method of responding the presented questions and measure the credibility of these responses, in addition to the evaluation of the level of access of the author to the presented goals and his adherence to the rules of reading.
