ادونيس، در كتاب الثابت و المتحول (سنت و تجدد)، بازشناسي، تبيين و تحليل ديالكتيك سنت و تجدد را در فرهنگ اسلامي و در حوزه هاي ديني، سياسي، فكري، و ادبي (شعر) از ظهور اسلام تا عصر حاضر دنبال مي كند. به باور وي، تصلب سنت در عرصه هاي ديني، فكري و ادبي، عرصه را براي تجدد و نوآوري در هر يك از اين حوزه ها تنگ و دشوار مي سازد. چنان كه تنها رويكرد تاويلي به سنت يا اعراض از آن راهي به آرمانشهر تجدد و نوآوري خواهد گشود. بي ترديد، بررسي عميق و گسترده ي وي از ميراث مكتوب فرهنگ و تمدن اسلامي، افق هاي تازه اي در حوزه ي علوم انساني به طور عام و شعر و ادب به طور خاص مي گشايد. نوشتار حاضر، ملاحظلات تحليلي- انتقادي به اين كتاب و مفاهيم مطروحه در آن خواهد داشت.
