چكيده فارسي :
اولين مواجهه جدي ايران با جهان غرب در دوره قاجار اتفاق افتاد و اين دورهاي است كه هر دو طرف اين مواجهه شرايطي خاص را تجربه ميكردند. از يك طرف ايران در دوره كشمكش هاي بعد از فروپاشي حكومت صفويه بود كه تا مدتها گريبانگير دولتمردان قاجار بود و از طرف ديگر توسعه طلبي هاي پيشگامان مغرب زمين بعد از رنسانس بدنبال بسط و گسترش تسلط اقتصادي و فرهنگي خود در ديار شرق و سرزمينهايي چون ايران بود. نقطه عطف اين توسعه طلبي ها در توجه به ايران در جنگ‌هاي ايران و روس رقم ميخورد كه نهايتاً به شكست ايران در اين جنگ‌ها ختم ميشود و پيامدهايي براي ايران به‌دنبال دارد.
دراين ميان نقشآن نسل از نخبگان ايراني كه غرب را از نزديك درك كرده و الگوهاي موردنظر و عمل آن را انتقال داده بودند غيرقابل كتمان است كه در قالب انديشه هاي آزاديخواهي، دموكراسي، قانون اساسي، پارلمانيسم و حتي حيرت در مواجهه با ترقيات غرب نخستين بار ازطريق همين افراد و سفرنامه هاي آنها ايران مورد توجه قرار گرفت.
در اين پژوهش سفرنامه ميرعبدالطيف شوشتري انتخاب شده است كه مي‌تواند ابزار مطالعاتي مناسبي در جهت بازخواني نحوه و مبادي نگرش روشنفكران نسل اول قرار گيرد.
