Abstract :
Water resources planning and management is used to address diverse demands and optimally allocate water resources to various water uses. For example, use of water as irrigation can negatively affect the possible energy production from that water. This study investigated such effects by developing optimization and simulation models for a water resource system with multiple reservoirs. In these models, irrigation water and firm energy are held constant by using the parametric variable approach. The models are applied to a water resource system with multiple reservoirs in the Ceyhan Basin of Turkey. The model is optimized using dynamic programming with successive approximations. When between 45 × 106 m3/year and 55 × 106 m3/year of irrigation water are used, the optimum total benefit is around 499 × 106 USD/year. The total benefit obtained from the simulation model is 487.426 × 106 USD/year, a value that is 1.7% smaller than the optimal total benefit calculated in the optimization model.
