Abstract :
The use of simulation programs in order to achieve optimum configurations for process- and mold design in polymer processing has gained considerably in importance in recent years. Two-dimensional simulation programs are still in general use today. This type of modelling is only suitable for thin-walled molded parts. Three-dimensional flow effects, such as those that occur at expansions in cross-sections, at the base of ribs or in thick-walled parts, require a 3D simulation. Therefore the IKV is currently working on the development of a 3D injection molding simulation program, based on finite element analysis. Besides the pure filling simulation, the prediction of internal properties is becoming increasingly important. Knowledge of the fiber orientation is a key requirement for predicting the mechanical properties of short-fiber reinforced parts. IKVʹs 3D injection molding software has therefore been extended by facilities for calculating the fiber orientation.
