Abstract
This paper describes a way of improving surface quality of rotary-machined surfaces by introducing additional vertical cutterhead movement. It is shown through simulation that vertical cutterhead movement reduces surface waviness height, if synchronized with the angular position of the knife tips. A discussion on the vertical cutterhead movement implementation is presented. A new algorithm for surface waviness simulation of rotary machined surfaces is also presented. The algorithm is used to investigate the influence of vertical cutterhead movement on the machined surface.
