Abstract :
We have designed and built a cryogenic system which uses no expendable liquid cryogens and consists of a three-stage cryocooler together with a three-stage sorption cooler to achieve a base temperature of 239 mK. We achieve a temperature of 250 mK at the expected 0.5 μW loading. The duty cycle of the sorption cooler alone is 93%. The cryogenic system is designed for autonomous cycling and operation, and will be used to cool the detectors and optics on the Polatron instrument to observe the 2.7 K cosmic microwave background.
