Abstract :
The effect of different variables of the rolling operation on the lateral spread in the first pass of the finishing mill has been studied. A simplified 3D finite element model has been used to calculate the stress and strain fields in the rolling gap using the constitutive equations for the materials calculated from torsion tests performed at high temperatures. Although a very simple approach to the friction problem has been used (Coulomb friction), good agreement between the calculations and the experimental values measured for the power in an Arcelor facility (Avilés, Spain) has been observed. The influence of the interstand tension between the rolling mills on the spread and the stress state in the slab has been also studied.
