Abstract :
A systematic investigation of the isothermal section at 750°C of the U–Fe–Sn ternary system was done by means of scanning electron microprobe analysis and X-ray powder diffraction. The phase diagram at this temperature is characterized by the formation of two ternary compounds and two significantly broad solid solution ranges. The compounds are U2Fe2Sn, with U3Si2-type structure (space group P4/mbm, a=7.302(1) Å, c=3.447(1) Å), and UFe5Sn, with CeCu5Au-type structure (space group Pnma, a=8.091(3) Å, b=4.873(2) Å, c=10.469(4) Å). The two solid solutions are formed from the UFe2 and FeSn binary compounds.
