Abstract :
An investigation was conducted to synthesize and characterize two silica–acrylic–epoxy hybrid coatings on 430 stainless steel (430SS): one contains 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (γMPS) modified silica particles (CCMS) and the other contains unmodified ones (CCUS). Both were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared reflection and absorption spectra (FTIR-RAS). Corrosion resistance was evaluated by salt spray test and potentiodynamic polarization technique. The CCMS-coated 430SS exhibits a higher protective efficiency than the CCUS-coated. The enhanced delamination resistance of the CCMS-coated 430SS during the salt spray testing is attributed to its homogeneous surface having few defects and strong interfacial adhesion resulting from the formation of Fe–O–Si covalent bonds.
