Abstract
The gain of microstrip gas counters (MSGCs) was studied for two of the most commonly used gases, CF4 and isobutane, in the range of 100 to 1015 mbar gas pressure and of 100 to 400 V bias voltage. It was found that the microstrip gain decreases with increasing gas pressure, however the signal induced by non-relativistic ions exhibits a maximum at a gas-dependent pressure. This behaviour is described by computer simulations of the evolution of single-electron avalanches.
