Abstract
To analyse the formation of dislocation patterns during the early stages of monotonic and cyclic deformation, the sweeping of edge dipolar loops by gliding dislocations has been examined by three different approaches. Dynamic simulations show the efficiency of this mechanism, particularly when it leads to the formation of a mobile tripolar configuration, as well as its propensity to induce the formation of organised structures. The critical condition for the formation of a tripole configuration is further studied by simplified numerical and analytical methods, leading to the concept of a critical character or angle of the gliding dislocation.
