Abstract :
In this paper, a multilayered TiB2/Al–Ni composite was successfully processed via roll bonding process using TiB2 particles reinforced aluminum matrix composite (TiB2/Al) foils and Ni foils as starting materials. There existed a supersaturated solid solute layer (denoted by Al (Ni) layer) near the interface between TiB2/Al–Ni layers. Wide stacking faults, up to 20 nm in width, were observed in the Al (Ni) layer. High-resolution electron microscope was used to identify the wide stacking fault. The broadening of stacking fault is attributed to addition of Ni and the local high stress during the rolling process. The presence of stacking fault increases the hardness of interface, and accommodated stress concentration during rolling between TiB2/Al–Ni layers to increase deformability of the TiB2/Al–Ni composite.
