Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading causes
of morbidity and mortality in the adult population. The
growing burden imposed by major NCDs (coronary heart
disease, stroke, diabetes, and respiratory disturbances), particularly
in the developing countries, overwhelms the already strained
health services. Primary prevention of the factors underlying the
major NCDs is the most cost-effective approach to containing this
