Abstract
Students in a business communication class who participated in this service-learning project, a Heading Buddies program in an elementary school, reported that they learned to put othersʹ needs first and that they learned more about themselves. Service-Learning is a monitored service experience in which students have specific learning goals and reflect on what they are learning from the service experience in which students have specific learning goals and reflect on what they are learning from the experience. The service is a credit-bearing experience that is linked to the academic subject matter. Students learn and develop through participating in organized experiences that meet community needs, enhancing what is taught in the classroom and fostering a sense of caring for others. Faculty who implement community service in their classes need to identify course objectives, determine community needs, identify the service activity and objectives, prepare students, and incorporate assessments.
